Did you notice that I did not use the term “smudge” when describing the Positive Vibes Gift Box even though it includes dried white sage? Smudging is a sacred tradition practiced by many Indigenous people. It’s a ceremony which I have not been trained to perform that requires white sage.

I choose sustainably cultivated, organic white sage because it ensures that my use does not deplete the wild resources that Indigenous tribes hold sacred and because the quality level matches that which I would like to grow for myself. I plan to try these white sage seeds which claim to be ethically sourced soon as I do know that growing the sage which I include in my Positive Vibes Gift Box myself would make it even more meaningful.
Personally, when I burn sage, I also recite affirmations, pray, and/or meditate. I find the scent soothing and associate it with purity and cleanliness… and I know it is actually my intentions and actions which accompany the use of sage – my personal rituals – that make the positive changes possible. White sage is simply the scent I associate with the proper mindset.
Purchasing sustainably sourced products ensures that my personalized practice does not threaten the culture which inspired me. Describing myself as someone “spreading positive vibes” (not smudging) and using the phrase “cleanse your space” to emphasize the importance of setting an intention and the role which scent plays in that experience.
Leave me a comment if there is anything more you think I should do to show respect for the Indigenous practice and avoid cultural appropriation. ๐
