Building a Bankroll from $0

By

Did you hear about the poker pro who took on the challenge of trying to build a bankroll from zero (while live streaming 24/7) last month? His name is Kevin Martin. He is a GGPoker ambassador and, according to Hendon Mob, his total live earnings are $473,357. I think it is safe to say that he is far more skilled than the average micro stakes poker player. Still, he was unable to turn $0 into $5,000 in less than 500 hours. In fact, he only made it 10% of the way to his goal.

In the end, he advised others not to try to build a bankroll from zero. He reminded his followers that many good players have busted. He said we should play poker on the side and always take care of our money. I am beyond grateful that he did this challenge and showed just how difficult a task it is. I needed that reminder.

Personally, I have been trying to build a bankroll from “zero” for… quite a few years. At times, just keeping my bills paid was an enormous challenge. I felt lucky to have any cash to play poker with at all. My finances are far more stable now than they were then, but I still don’t have near enough savings stashed away to feel it is safe to risk a full day’s wages (or more) on the felt very often. Did you know that a proper bankroll is about 10,000 big blinds – $30,000 for $1/3 No Limit Hold’em?

It’s been increasingly frustrating to stick to my limited poker budget now that I’m vlogging, but… I shall persist… and keep working to grow my knowledge of the game…

Given the fact Game Theory Optimal (GTO) play is said to be unexploitable in the long run, many seem to feel safe risking large sums of money that they can’t really afford to lose for the chance to run it up… but not me. Watch the latest video on my vlog (below) to learn more.
