I’ve decided to start posting brief book reviews here featuring the titles that have had the biggest impact on me and I can think of no better place to start than Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz, MD, FICS. To date I’ve listened to the book three times, read the paperback once, and wrote a series of poems to help cement the concepts in my brain and adjust my way of thinking.

I discovered Psycho-Cybernetics in 2021 after more than a decade struggling to build a life as an artist and writer. I instantly connected with the former plastic surgeon’s discovery that, “a person cannot rise above how he sees himself.” Maltz book made it clear that my doubts and fears had held me back, even when I was brave and finding some ways to move forward. It helped me see that I actually had achieved the life which I believed I deserved. I had gotten where I was because I wasn’t truly comfortable with the idea of achieving my dreams. I couldn’t really see myself accomplishing my goals.

The secret is this: To really “live,” that is, to find life reasonably satisfying, you must have an adequate and realistic self-image that you can live with. You must find your self acceptable to “you.”

I use the techniques described in this book regularly and refer to it often in my essays. For me, Maltz’ words explain how God designed our brain to work. Utilizing his visualization practices added another dimension to the idea of prayer in my life. The book helped me believe I deserve better and taught me how to achieve more.

Every living thing has a built-in guidance system or goal-striving device, put there by its Creator to help it achieve its goal- which is, in broad terms – “to live”.

[…] Psycho-Cybernetics and several other things I’ve read recently offer similar advice. This tarot reading for Sagittarians like me which hit YouTube as I was editing this story (skip to 29:29) echoed past conversations I had with my friend and reminded me to be specific. Asking for and meditating on the image of what I want is essentially how I manifested my new, better apartment. So far, these private practices haven’t worked on my love life the way they have for other issues. Therefore, because of the words my friend said years ago, the many other signs that have indicated that I should do this, and the guy I can’t get out of my head, I’m taking this manifestation technique to the next level.  […]
